SAN DIEGO, Feb. 17 - DTAI, Inc. has been selected by the Java Developer's Journal (JDJ) as the winner of the 1998 Editor's Choice Framework Award for the Lightweight Extensible Information Framework (LEIF). The decision was announced on December 8 at the Java Business Expo in New York. JDJ has decided to acknowledge companies that have developed Java-based solutions that meet and respond to technological demands. The products that have been chosen offer significant advances in database management, application development, and other related technologies. These contributions have helped smooth the way in the implementation of modern innovations.
When JDJ announced the first annual contest for the Editor's Choice Award, they made clear that certain regulations and guidelines were required. Only new products that have been available for two years or less and are directly related to Java would be taken into consideration. This award was designed to recognize products that are new to the market and demonstrate a high level of potential to help push Java developments forward.
LEIF was chosen as the Framework category winner of the Editor's Choice Award because it leverages the best and most advanced features of Java to deliver a complete platform for information integration and data visualization. LEIF combines advanced JavaBeans technology (InfoBus, BeanContext, JavaBeans Activation Framework) with intelligent data awareness through Java's reflection mechanisms. The LEIF architecture provides the means to gather information simultaneously from a variety of remote sources, using any protocol (CORBA, RMI, JDBC, etc.), translate that information into a common object representation, and then process and display that data intelligently using independently-developed graphs, maps, spreadsheets, and other visualization tools.
"We are pleased to see LEIF winning Java Developer's Journal prestigious Editor's Choice Award," said Sean Rhody, editor-in-chief of Java Developer's Journal. "It is an honor for us to recognize products that provide efficient business solutions with Java."
Java has been a key factor in the creation of LEIF. "The JDK 1.2 has delivered significant architectural improvements, such as the Collections APIs and BeanContext, that have improved the quality of our large-scale Java technology-based applications," said Rich Kadel, VP for Java Development and LEIF Chief Architect. "It has also given us important user interface and visualization tools in JFC, including drag-and-drop, the advanced 2D graphics APIs, and Swing. These improvements in the new JDK 1.2 release are extremely valuable in that they offer the functionality required to meet our customers needs, in what we feel is the best language available for programming in-the-large."
