The print version of the 24-page brochure will accompany August issues of all SYS-CON print publications. The conference brochure will also be included in the preview issue of SYS-CON's newest print magazine, .NET Developer's Journal. The preview issue of .NET Developer's Journal will have a print run of 140,000 copies, and will be distributed through newsstands and specialty bookstores such as Borders and Barnes & Noble.

With the upcoming fourth international show, Web Services Edge 2002 International Web Services Conference & Expo has established itself as the world's largest independent Web services event. To accommodate the tremendous growth in participation, this year's East Coast event moved to New York's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, more than doubling last year's Expo hall space from 14,000 square feet to over 36,000 square feet. The Web Services Edge East Expo, which took place June 24-27 in New York City, drew a total attendance of more than 8,000 delegates. Over 4,200 delegates registered to various Conference education tracks, including the most popular one-day Web Services tutorial session (www.sys-con.com/education).

"The popularity of Web Services Edge has far exceeded the participation in all other Web Services related events put together," said Fuat Kircaali, founder and CEO of SYS-CON Media and SYS-CON Events, Inc. "SYS-CON is committed to bring a world class conference program and education opportunity to the i-technology professionals attending our October 1-3 event in San Jose, California."

"We are very excited to bring our leading Web Services event to San Jose, California," said Grisha Davida, vice president of business development of SYS-CON Media. "Web Services Edge 2002 West will offer the best education opportunity to conference participants and an excellent opportunity to meet the world's leading Web Services vendors and see their latest technologies."

"Web Services Edge 2002 West not only offers one of the best education opportunities available today, but also is one of the most affordable education options extended to developers," said Cathy Walters, vice president of SYS-CON Events. "A one-day tutorial priced as low as $245 and three-day full conference packages offered as low as $395 make the conference affordable for all i-technology professionals who are serious about furthering their careers and extending their cutting-edge skill sets."

Keynote Presentation by: Barry Morris, CEO, IONA
Session Title: Web Services Integration Technology for the 21st Century
Date and Time: Wednesday, October 2 - 11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.

Speaker Bio: Barry Morris was named CEO of IONA in May 2000. Mr. Morris is the visionary behind IONA's End 2 Anywhere Web Services Integration Strategy. He has guided the creation and evolution of the Orbix E2A e-Business Platform and successfully integrated the strategic acquisitions of Netfish Technologies, Object Oriented Concepts, Inc., and Suplicity.

Since joining IONA in 1994, Mr. Morris has served as vice president of product management and subsequently as chief operating officer. During this tenure, he successfully established the company's US headquarters in Waltham, MA.

Prior to joining IONA, Mr. Morris worked at Digital Equipment Corporation, Lotus Development Corporation, Protek Electronics Ltd., and Leading Technology Inc. Mr. Morris, 38, was raised in South Africa and educated in Britain. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in business administration (DBA) conferred by the International Management Centres Association (IMCA) in August of 2001. He received his bachelor of arts in engineering science from New College, Oxford University and lives with his family in Boston, MA.

Session Description: As software and technology has evolved, organizations have continued to build out their application infrastructure, adding new functionality first and worrying how to make it work with the rest of their applications second. Consequently, the economic model for business collaboration and application integration is broken - costing organizations in excess of $150 billion annually. Web Services will change this model and approach forever, and promise to save the Global 2000 alone close to $10 billion annually in business collaboration and application integration costs.

Join IONA CEO Barry Morris for a historical perspective on application integration, the emergence of standards, and how the convergence of these is leading to Web services as the integration technology of choice for the 21st Century.

He is a former member of the Transaction Internet Protocol working group at IETF; former chair of the OTS RTF at OMG; former chair of the submitter's team for the XML Valuetype specification at OMG; and has participated in several other standards activities throughout his career.

Eric is a frequent speaker at industry and company events, including the kick-off of IONA's current Webinar series on Web services. He is coauthor of Principles of Transaction Processing from Morgan Kaufmann and contributed a chapter to The Future of Software from MIT Press. Eric is also a member of the UDDI Advisory Group and was responsible for IONA joining the submissions to W3C of SOAP, WSDL, XKMS, and SOAP with Attachments. At IONA, Eric is responsible for Web services strategy and implementation, among other things.

Keynote Presentation by: Joanne Friedman, VP of Electronic Business Strategies, The META Group
Session Title: Web Services: Are They the Silver Bullet to Business Integration?
Date and Time: Thursday, October 3 - 2:30 p.m. - 3:15 p.m.

Speaker Bio: Ms. Friedman is a leading expert in electronic commerce, focusing on enterprise-to-enterprise (E2E) integration strategies, XML standards, and emerging Net markets. An accomplished speaker and author, she is recognized in the high-tech manufacturing industry for her work on inter-enterprise integration, B2B XML standards development, and management of the "virtual enterprise." Ms. Friedman complements her expertise in e-commerce strategy, planning, and architecture with significant experience in IT architecture, operations, and development. Prior to joining META Group in May 2000, Ms. Friedman held management and senior staff positions in intranet development and e-business for Fortune 500 companies in the high-tech and pharmaceutical sectors. She is a cofounder of the Virtual Factory Information Interchange Project, and continues to actively participate in industry initiatives such as RosettaNet, the Open Applications Group (OAG), and the National Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (NEMI).

Keynote Presentation by: John Magee, Sr. Product Director, Oracle9i Marketing, Oracle
Session Title: J2EE Development and Integration from a Web Services Perspective
Date and Time: Wednesday, October 2 - 2:00 p.m. - 2:45 p.m.

Speaker Bio: John Magee is senior product director of Oracle9i marketing at Oracle. He has more than 14 years experience in the enterprise software industry and has held positions in product development, product management, and product marketing. In his current role, he manages technical product marketing for Oracle's application server and development tools products, and is responsible for evangelizing Oracle technology initiatives around J2EE, XML, and Web services.

Session Description: Web services are changing how developers think about integration. Rather than a separate undertaking, integration is fundamentally part of new development projects, particularly in J2EE projects where standards have been defined for Web services, asynchronous messaging, and connector architectures. Coming at Web services from an integration perspective, standards like ebXML and RosettaNet have adopted Web services protocols under the covers but have really focused on business process standards, the missing ingredient for truly collaborative Web services. This talk will cover the challenges and opportunities that will arise as the technologies and standards in these two previously distinct worlds of development and integration come together.

Keynote Presentation by: Jonathan Schwartz, Executive Vice President, Software Group, Sun Microsystems
Date and Time: Wednesday, October 2 - 10:30 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.

Speaker Bio: As executive vice president of Sun's Software Group, Jonathan Schwartz, 36, leads Sun's new unified software business and focus. Sun's market leading software organization is one of the largest in the industry, responsible for the Solaris Operating Environment, at the heart of today's Internet; the Java platform, the standard bearer from cell phones to datacenters; and the Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) family of middleware and software solutions.

Previously, as CSO, Schwartz directed Sun's long-range planning and corporate development activities, including mergers and acquisitions, Sun's venture capital portfolio, and the oversight of strategic initiatives, including the Liberty Alliance, an industry alliance to promote standards around network identity. Previously, Schwartz headed Sun's investment group, and ran Sun's development tools and Java product marketing organizations.

Before joining Sun in 1996, Schwartz was chief executive officer of Lighthouse Design, Ltd., which Sun acquired. He began his career as a consultant with McKinsey & Co., Inc., serving financial services companies.

Keynote Presentation by: Kaj van de Loo, Director of Product Strategy, SAP
Session Title: Future of Web Services: Internal vs External Applications & SOAP
Date and Time: Tuesday, October 1 - 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Speaker Bio: As director of the product strategy team of SAP's business unit for commerce applications, Kaj van de Loo leads the formulation and implementation of SAP's Web services strategy, taking into account the business impact of Web services as well as its implications on technology and applications. Mr. van de Loo has also held several development management positions within SAP, focusing on functional areas such as project management and complex manufacturing and industries such as aerospace & defense and high tech.

Assuming responsibility for Web services strategy at SAP is a natural step for van de Loo, who previously served as director of application development at SAP Markets, where he built and led one of the first major Java development teams within SAP and pioneered several Web-based applications for SAP Markets.

Mr. van de Loo holds a master's degree in engineering physics from the Uppsala University School of Technology as well as a bachelor's degree in business administration and economics from the Universities of Lund and Uppsala in Sweden.

Session Description: According to Gartner, the prospects for internal Web services for in-house application are much better than the prospects for external Web services, which still suffer from security and trust issues. For this reason, it is important that IT decision-makers consider the immediate viability of Web services for in-house use, as opposed to the potential for different, external use modes over the longer term. Also important to investigate is the concept of totally "fluid" computing built on the SOAP protocols that facilitate Web services. Along with wireless technology and voice recognition, standards-based Web services will play a critical role in making information management truly invisible and ubiquitous in years to come.

Keynote Presentation by: Michael G. Maas, Vice President of Marketing, IBM
Session Title: The Impact of Web Services on Wireless
Date and Time: Thursday, October 3 - 10:15 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Speaker Bio: Michael Maas is vice president of marketing for IBM's communications sector, which includes the telecommunications, media, entertainment, energy services, and utility industries. He leads the marketing efforts globally for those industries, as well as for cross-IBM initiatives in digital media and wireless e-business.

In 2001 as director of marketing for wireless e-business, Michael was responsible for the marketing of wireless data solutions to enterprises and service providers. IBM is the leader in this market, with a collection of hardware, software, and services delivered in the form of end-to-end wireless solutions.

During 1999 and 2000, Michael managed server marketing for the IBM RS/6000 Brand, which includes midrange Unix servers, large SMPs, and the SP ("Deep Blue") supercomputer. His previous responsibilities at IBM include managing efforts to develop transaction processing solutions, and directing IBM relationships with independent software vendors.

Michael joined IBM in 1995 after a decade of experience in the supercomputer industry, holding various management and technical positions at Control Data Corporation, ETA Systems, Inc., and Kendall Square Research, Inc. At ETA he helped engineer a liquid-nitrogen supercooled vector processor, and was involved in semiconductor development, system design, and technology prototyping. At KSR he helped design a distributed cache massively parallel computer, and built the systems manufacturing capability to support production deliveries.
