(Montvale, NJ, September 30, 2003) - SYS-CON Events, Inc. announced today that Web Services Edge 2003 West - International Web Services Conference & Expo opened at 11:00 a.m. this morning at the Santa Clara Convention Center, in Santa Clara, California, to a standing room only crowd. The day kicked off with an exhilarating opening Keynote delivered by Amazon.com's Allan Vermeulen, in which he compared the tipping point we have reached with Web services in the 21st century with the analogous moment in the story of electricity, that's to say the 1890s.

"It's exactly like the incredible wave of innovation that happened at the beginning of the 20th century around electrical appliances," Vermeulen observed. "The connectivity is in place, the basic standards are sufficiently agreed upon, and the building blocks of distributed software exist," he continued. "What's needed now above all, is a workable economic model so that companies like Amazon.com and Google, who now expose their platform through Web services - in Amazon's case to 30,000 developers - can figure out how best to encourage people to use the platform in new and innovative ways that ultimately monetize for them and for us alike."

This week's Web Services Edge event, the sixth in a series, reminds the i-technology world that SYS-CON's one-stop, multi-technology conferences and expos continue to do what they have done so well for the past three years: offer a full-blown education program in the technical sessions, while using the Exhibit Hall to help software development vendors - giants and startups alike - to build awareness of their products and services within the developer community, as well as offer support to developers and managers.

The sponsors and exhibitors of the event will offer their innovative new technologies to conference delegates, corporate i-technology managers, industry decision makers, and software buyers.

The three-day event is sponsored by the world's leading i-technology companies, including Oracle, Novell, Microsoft, and Sun. SYS-CON will offer customized education tracks on Web Services, Java, .NET, and XML technologies, as well as vendor-specific learning opportunities for i-technology managers.

"Web Services Edge - International Web Services Conference & Expo has established itself as the leading i-technology event in the world since its launch in September 2001, in New York City," said Fuat Kircaali, founder and CEO of SYS-CON Events, Inc. "By popular demand, this year our West Coast Conference has returned to Santa Clara. This will be our sixth international event, and one of the most significant shows we have put together to date."

"This year's Conference & Expo is sponsored by the leading companies in the industry, as well as by top experts who are participating as the conference faculty, partners, and exhibitors," said Grisha Davida, president of SYS-CON Events, Inc. "In Santa Clara, we will offer the best education opportunity of the year, covering the most essential Web services topics, designed by the conference advisory committee and taught by the world's most renowned experts and speakers in their fields."
